To the Exhausted Wife: (Psalm 127) God is the Perfect Homemaker

Running a home is no easy task! For every Christian wife it can be a huge weight, right? I won’t call it a burden because it’s a blessing from the Lord, but it can feel exhausting at times.

Are you an experienced wife or a newlywed looking for a little hope? The Lord is our refuge and that’s where I’m hoping to tag along with you today as we dive deep into Psalm 127.

Psalm 127 Where we Meet the Perfect “Homemaker”

We will be concentrating on the first two verses but please read the whole thing here.

1  Unless the LORD builds the house,

those who build it labor in vain.

Unless the LORD xwatches over the city,

the watchman stays awake in vain.

2 It is in vain that you rise up early

and go late to rest,

eating the bread of anxious ytoil;

for he gives to his zbeloved asleep.

Here is a brief summary of this psalm as stated in my ESV Bible commentary notes, “the basic theme of this wisdom psalm is that without the Lord’s blessing all human toil is worthless.”

So, what does this mean?

The book of Ecclesiastics came to mind. It can be a bit depressing, but all its really trying to say is that without God, our work isn’t a blessing but rather full of sorrow.

We can work and work (toil), but we have to put our trust in God along the working and toiling. God can make our work good and purposeful.

Being wise means being diligent, but not anxious and greedy about what we do. It can be a hard thing to do. Most women would agree with me that we want things done, and often don’t think about the side effect of anxiety until it’s too late.

The Lord is the True Keeper

This is what I think the first two verses of Psalm 127 are inviting us to do.

We must remember to go to the One that truly keeps and guards our home. God is the source; He is the vine and without Him we can-do no-good thing.

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. -John 15:5

Is Your Home Running on Exhaustion?

When our homes aren’t running smoothly, we must ask why__ sometimes it’s obvious, but even then we must be honest.

In the home sometimes frustration, tiredness and selfishness results in the opposite of kindness and gentleness. Like Galatians 5:22 tells us.

And that’s my reminder to you sister, when you think miss perfect is not cleaning, cooking or being nice enough this week go to the One that truly edifies your home.

He is the Peace in Chaos

He can truly keep our home in the mists of chaos. You and I can work all day long trusting that our work rests in his (work) hands. He will prune the branches that aren’t producing fruit.

He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunesa] so that it will be even more fruitful. – John 15:2

“If we confess our sins …

He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

-1 John 1:9

Thank you for making it this far into this reflection. I hope it was helpful. Let me encourage you to not stop here but go to Him directly. You can be bold and go to Him about anything that’s troubling you.

In Christ,

Rosa Rosa

Think About These Things

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
