How to See the Light during Dark and Difficult Days: Rest in Jesus Christ the Light of the World

During difficult days the darkness covers our days like a black cloth. We wonder if the light has disappeared, if the light has been extinguished forever.

Do you feel like the darkness is taking over your life? All you see is difficulty and hardship!

I want to assure you, that the light is still there!

The common question when we grieve is “WHY?”

We want to know why things happen. I believe it’s a natural response, and it’s a cry of distress in most cases.

The truth is that a satisfactory answer is hard to find. Your heart in distress doesn’t want to accept any answer… and that’s why we NEED to find peace first.

This blog post is not a one stop place to find healing, answers or even peace, but I want to share some hope and encouragement with you.

Wherever you find yourself today, I hope and pray you leave this page with a new perspective.

Let’s Talk about Darkness and Light, What is it?

Darkness exists in a room without light. Darkness exists in a place without hope. It exists in a place of conflict, in a place without order, in a place with hate and in place with sin.

The perfect place to begin studying darkness is in the book of Genesis. The Lord separated the darkness and the light. He called it Day and Night. Genesis 1:4

Darkness has many meanings but we will get to that later.

The Light is a Person: the Way, the Truth and the Life!

Now, if we go to the New Testament in the book of John, you can read all about the light and the darkness in more detail. And this is the light I want you to think about.

Let’s do a summary of this Chapter in John

John 1:1-18

  • Jesus is introduced as the Word
  • The Word is God and has existed from the beginning (eternity)!
  • Jesus (the Word) is the LIFE and the LIGHT of men (people)
  • The darkness can’t extinguish the light
  • Jesus is the Light and made all things
  • The Light came to his own and they did not receive Him
  • But everyone who receives Him will be called son’s of God
  • Those Who receive Him are born of God (New Birth John 3:3)
  • The Word (Jesus) became flesh (human)
  • From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace
  • Moses gave the law, Jesus brought truth and grace (salvation)

The Light is Jesus. If we have Christ, we have an eternal hope. We have the source of goodness and life. The darkness can NEVER extinguish the light. No matter the situation we are in, please know Christ is just a prayer away.

2 Samuel 22:29

Important Reminders about the Darkness:

  • Genesis 1:2 – Darkness was there before God’s creation
  • 1 John 1:5 – There is NO darkness in God

Darkness has many names: evil, judgement, sin, death, falsehood, night and much more.

It’s important to see the different ways it can be used in scripture and in life. The night is darkness, and it is good. But sin is darkness, and it is NOT good.

I want you to consider where you see darkness in your life and what type is it?

  • Winter = darkness or anger = darkness?
  • Night = darkness or falsehood = darkness?

Here are some mini examples, but I encourage you to sit and write/pray with all honesty to the Lord about the darkness you are dealing with today.

Know that Jesus is there with you. Psalm 139:12

Jesus is with us there… yes, there where you are right now! He was tempted, He was persecuted, betrayed, naked. He even died too. Darkness is no mystery to Christ. And you know the best part?

He can drive out darkness, He conquered it on the cross forever. John 12:44-50

Important Verses about the Light

Here are several verses to remind you about the true light. We can never loose it, we must just remember that it’s Jesus.

Sin: The Darkness to Truly Fear

The truth is that sin is the darkness that truly hurts. It’s the darkness we can’t see.

How crazy is that?

We fear the darkness of night, but the true darkness we should be fearing is so dark and evil that it hides in our hearts. It’s there everyday and everywhere.

Billy Graham once said, in one of his sermons, that the sin of “hate is what pulls the trigger”.

If you think the problem and hardship in your life is something else; reconsider please.

Christ came to save us from this evil in our heart. Sin is the darkness that separates us from God. It’s the evil that causes death. Sin can drive us to another death.

The second death, the death that is eternal punishment. We sinned and death came into the world. Romans 5:12

But know that through Christ, through Him, we can live forever. 1 Corinthians 15:20-22

Understanding this is the beginning to finding the the light in dark days.

Steps to Chase the True Light

  1. Come to Christ and give him your burdens and your heart.
  2. Trust that Christ is the good and holy God that loves you.
  3. Repent and turn from your sins.
  4. Confess your sins to Christ daily.
  5. Trust him, and lay at his feet.
  6. He is the good shepherd and he knows his sheep. John 10:11
  7. Fear God and not man.
  8. Find a church family.
  9. Pray daily for Him to lead you.
  10. Praise him, and in difficult days remember He is good.

Temptations to Give to Christ during Hard Days

  1. God is not good.
  2. God can’t hear me.
  3. God has forgotten me.
  4. I could never stop sinning.
  5. I can’t forgive.
  6. It hurts too much to believe.
  7. He can’t love someone like me.
  8. My darkness can never be forgiven.

Don’t believe those thoughts, they are only lies. John 10:10

If you have trusted in Jesus, then you are completely his friend! No need to fear.

He is the Light in your life, believe it. Jesus is the light, the way, the truth and the life that holds you.

The darkness can NEVER extinguish the LIGHT of the world.

John 1:5

Nothing can separate us from the love of God! Romans 8:35-38

Think About These Things

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

-Philippians 4:8

The Word Became Flesh

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
