How Christian Rest is Completely Different

Christian rest is about more than just physical rest, it goes beyond that!

We can be physically rested, and still be so desperately, spiritually and emotionally exhausted or weary as Jesus said.

Let’s Start with Jesus: He was Tired Too!

Jesus is the perfect place to start talking about tiredness, weariness and sorrow.

Often when we say that we are tired it’s never just one sided. Although it can be, right?

Like after a run, I’m now super tired.

But how about the tiredness that Jesus experienced? Let’s talk about that.

Jeremiah 6:16

Jesus Needed Sleep Too

Let’s go to the passage of Jesus sleeping on a boat. Matthew 8:23-27

Jesus is God, but He is also fully (100%) human.

We see Jesus sleeping on a boat, after a long day of preaching and teaching. His disciples are on board worried for their lives. Afterall, Jesus was sleeping in the middle of a crazy storm.

We can assume many things, but scripture shows us how Jesus slept, and therefore needed rest.

He was TIRED!

 Jesus the Man of Sorrows

Matthew 11:28-29

Jesus Experienced the Same Sorrow we Feel

Isaiah 53:3

I won’t tell you why Jesus was called the man of sorrows because there are many reasons. But the important thing here is that he suffered in many ways.

He felt physical pain and also sorrow (a pain we can’t see, but there are signs of course).

I would categorize sorrow as a state of emotional unrest.
When we experience our emotions going from one direction to another, and often in an intense way.

The end result tends to be exhaustion.

Here is where you can see that Jesus felt just that.

Jesus experienced the pain that comes along with being emotionally weary.

After all, Jesus cried and went to the father to pray many times. There He rested. There is no doubt.

Being Tired is the Hint for Rest

I wanted you to see that being tired is normal, it’s not strange or less than.

To our own eyes tiredness can be easily hidden, but it has a purpose.

There are many ways to hide the reality of how we truly feel.

Distractions tend to keep us at “peace” ___ “if I stop thinking about it, then I can ignore it.”

But we have limits. God gave us boundaries, and REST is his antidote.

We are tired so we know that REST is what we need.

Genesis 2:1-2

Physical Rest is Only One Side

Christian rest is so different because physical rest is not the only priority.

Going for a walk, taking a nap and even praying in itself is restful, but in the end, it’s lacking something. And that something is CHRIST.

Jesus came to give us a life that won’t perish, or as he said, “… I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” (John 10:10)

You see, mere rest without Christ is not enough. It may feel peaceful to sit and relax but the true rest lives in Christ. And when Christ lives in us, then we can never run to far from the true source of peace and eternal rest for our souls.

1 Corinthians 15:50

Rest is Made for Our Soul

The reality is that there is no rest in the grave, at least not without Christ.

We can take a good long nap and feel rested. We can go on a long vacation, we can meditate, tune out every noise. Have our zen place and still be without true rest.
We can die and still be without rest.

The rest Christians have is eternal. And yes, we die. The body is made to die and go back to ashes. But we have a promise from Christ, the first resurrected, that our body will become incorruptible just like his.

But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. –1 Corinthians 15:20-22

There is an eternal aspect to us, and it needs Jesus Christ, the Lord of the Sabbath.

Christ Gives us Rest Today and Forever

Jesus Christ is our true peace and true rest. That’s why we can walk on this earth with problems, pain and exhaustion and still feel at rest (peace).

We can go to Christ with anything and know that he is capable of suppling us with true rest.

As GotQuestions.org says, When Jesus said, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath” (Mark 2:27), Jesus was attesting to the fact that, just as the Sabbath day was originally instituted to give man rest from his labors, so did He come to provide us rest from laboring to achieve our own salvation by our works. Because of His sacrifice on the cross, we can now forever cease laboring to attain God’s favor and rest in His mercy and grace.

So, have you experienced true rest?

Christ saves and gives rest to those who put their trust in Him. We can be assured of our eternal rest, our salvation, if we just believe and call upon the name of Jesus.

Think About These Things

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

-Philippians 4:8

The Word Became Flesh

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
