What Sewing Supplies you need to start today!

Sharing is caring!

Sewing is not hard, but it does come with some steps and tools of the trade. Here are the supplies I used when I started to sew.

I only had a small budget, and didn’t know anything, so buying too many supplies was scary.

So, here are the tools that got me through learning the basics. You need very little to begin.

Beginner sewist, let’s go!

1. The Sewing Machine

If you want to sew, I’m sure the best part is going to be picking a machine. It’s just so cute, and intimidating all at the same time.

Buying a machine comes with two options, either you go new or used, and both are great options. Maybe you want to know that this was yours and only yours, so you can have a great story to tell your future grandkids.

Maybe, you have a budget and going used is the best option, or maybe you don’t know and you will figure it out as you go.

Either way, I can’t wait for you to have one!

I personally have a discontinued Brother machine that cost $150, and I couldn’t be happier, honestly this brand is never a bad option. I got it used, from a quilter. I love my machine!

2. Fabric Scissors

The second supply you need to start your sewing journey is a good pair of fabric scissors. Trust me, the thing that matters most is cutting your fabric without a hassle.

A good pair of shears that doesn’t break the bank is also not hard to find. As, a beginner we want the tools, but without so much investment.

I do recommend a new pair, unless you are getting a whole sewing kit from a trusted source. I can only imagine meeting a quilter who needs to sell her precious stash and a good pair of scissors is in the stash.

I do recommend these, after almost 2 years of use, they haven’t let me down yet, and the price is just right.

3.Thread

Honestly buying thread as a beginner sounds difficult, there is just so many options. From a beginner, to another, just go with polyester and start with the colors you need most. I started with two colors; white and black.

After your projects start to pile, the colors with also grow.

I did end up buying a cream set of thread after a couple months, and this brand was great for me.

4.Tape measure

Maybe you think that a begiiner can skip the measuring tape, but nope. Sewing requires fabric and fabric requires measuring.

Sewing and a ruler of some kind is essential. This tool will be used every single time.

Don’t skip it! I don’t have specific recommendations, but look around and buy what you like.

5.Pins/clips

You need something to hold your fabric down and pins are traditional, but clips are cute. They both work, I would try a combo to see what I like.

I hear there a really good brands, with glass pins, but for beginners we just need some supplies to get started.

I don’t have a specific recommendation, but maybe a sewing kit that has all the essentials might also work.

6. Elastic

I will say this, if you are going to quilt or make projects without elastic, then skip it.

But from the beginning I knew, I needed lot’s of elastic! The first skirt I made had some. Every beginner starts without buttons or zippers, so elastic is a must.

7. Fabric

Oh, the beloved fabric. How can you sew without it?

Honeslty, if you can have a budget for this alone you are golden.

I needed to start cheap, so thrifted bedsheets were my ticket to easy sewing.

Start with cotton and as you go start exploring more.

8. Seam ripper

You will make mistakes, and there is a tool for that in sewing. It’s like painting, if you make a mistake cover it with more paint, here it’s less obvious.

In sewing you unpick the seam you made. If it’s wonky, unpick it. If the machine starting giving you weird stitch lines, unpick the seam.

The seam ripper is a little friend and a little disappointment too. I have broken 3 in the years and half I’ve been sewing. I need to buy another one, or maybe now, is the time to look for a good brand.

9. Bobbins

Hey, your machine should come with some, but sometimes you want more.

You just need more, to stay organized and have pretty colors. Hey, people fill lots of the same color to save time in the process. Trust me there is nothing more annoying than filling bobbins.

I mean, I just want to sew.

10. Extra tools

Pinking shears:

These little shears help you finish an edge and I think it’s a great little trick for beginners. It takes the pressure off and you can just finish your project without fear of fraying.

One thing to note is that it’s not perfect, and it doesn’t work on everything, but it’s a great tool when you are new to sewing.

Pinking Shears

Iron:

Why did this not make the cut for things you need as beginner sewist? Well, the truth is that most beginner skip the sewing, so adding this to the list make sewing appear harder. I want you to start and not let anything stop you.

Honestly, the iron is your best friend, but even after almost two years of sewing myself, I still struggle with the iron. It does wonders, but you don’t need it to start. You do need need it to progress and improve though.

So, if you have one in your closet use it and if you don’t consider it and when you’re ready get it.

Let’s start sewing!

I’m so exiced for you! Please share in the comments what you are up to.

What projects, supplies, or sewing machine do you have? I would love to hear from you below.

Think About These Things

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

-Philippians 4:8

The Word Became Flesh

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
